What is actual reason behind सूतक-पातक? चरणानुयोग

We should not indulge in religious activity which have direct contact with religious stuff. Why is it so? Is it due to inconsistency of thoughts at that time or is there any bodily changes? Also, is it legitimate to read religious stuff at that time on electronic device? Please clarify.
