बेटी - माँ, चलो न घर !
माँ - चलती तो हूँ, जरा भक्तामरजी का पाठ कर लूँ।
बेटी - भक्तामरजी क्या है?
माँ - भक्तामर स्तोत्र एक स्तुति का नाम है, जिसमें भगवान आदिनाथ की स्तुति (भक्ति) की गई है।
बेटी - माँ, आदिनाथ कौन थे जिनकी स्तुति हजारों लोग प्रतिदिन करते हैं ?
माँ - वे भगवान थे। वे दुनियाँ की सब बातों को जानते थे तथा उनके मोह-राग-द्वेष नष्ट हो चुके थे, इस कारण परम सुखी थे।
बेटी - क्या वे जन्म से ही वीतरागी सर्वज्ञ थे ? उनका जन्म कहाँ हुआ था ?
माँ - नहीं बेटी ! उन्होंने वीतरागता और सर्वज्ञता पुरुषार्थ से प्राप्त की थी। उनका जन्म अयोध्या नगरी में वहाँ के राजा नाभिराय की रानी मरुदेवी के गर्भ से हुआ था।
बेटी - वे तो राजकुमार थे, क्या उन्होंने राज्य नहीं किया ?
माँ - राज्य किया, विवाह भी किया था। उनकी दो शादियाँ हुई थीं। पहली पत्नी का नाम नन्दा था, जिससे भरत चक्रवर्ती आदि सौ पुत्र और ब्राह्मी नामक पुत्री उत्पन्न हुई। दूसरी पत्नी का नाम सुनन्दा था, जिससे बाहुबली पुत्र और सुन्दरी नामक पुत्री उत्पन्न हुई।
बेटी - तो क्या भरत चक्रवर्ती और बाहुबली आदिनाथ भगवान के ही पुत्र थे?
माँ - भगवान तो वे बाद में बने। उस समय तो उनका नाम राजा ऋषभदेव था। प्रथम तीर्थंकर भगवान होने से उन्हें आदिनाथ भी कहने लगे। एक दिन राजा ऋषभदेव अपनी सभा में बैठे नीलांजना का नृत्य देख रहे थे। नृत्य के बीच में ही नीलांजना की मृत्यु हो गई। यह देख उन्हें संसार की क्षणभंगुरता का ध्यान आया और राजपाट आदि सभी का राग छोड़कर दिगम्बर हो गये। छह माह तक तो आत्म-ध्यान में लीन रहे। उसके बाद छह माह तक आहार की विधि नहीं मिली।
एक वर्ष बाद अक्षय तृतीया के दिन ऋषभ मुनि का सर्वप्रथम आहार राजा श्रेयांस के यहाँ इक्षुरस (गन्ने का रस) का हुआ। उसी दिन से अक्षय तृतीया पर्व चल पड़ा।
बेटी - क्या वे मुनि होते ही सर्वज्ञ बन गये थे ?
माँ - नहीं बेटी ! एक हजार वर्ष तक बराबर मौन आत्म साधना करते रहे । एक दिन आत्म-तल्लीनता की दशा में उन्हें केवलज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई और वे वीतरागी सर्वज्ञ बन गए तथा उनकी दिव्यध्वनि द्वारा तत्त्वोपदेश होने लगा जिससे भव्य जीवों को मुक्ति के मार्ग का ज्ञान हुआ।
बेटी - तो तुम क्या उनकी ही स्तुति करती हो ? मैं भी किया करूंगी। क्या वे मुझे भी मुक्ति का मार्ग बतायेंगे ?
माँ - अवश्य किया करना। वे तो कुछ दिन बाद मुक्त हो गए थे अर्थात् धर्मसभा (समवशरण) आदि को भी छोड़कर सिद्ध हो गए। पर उनका बताया हुआ मुक्तिमार्ग तो आज तक भी ज्ञानियों के द्वारा हमें प्राप्त है और जो उनके बताए मुक्तिमार्ग पर चलें वे ही उनके सच्चे भक्त हैं। तथा वे स्वयं भगवान भी बन सकते हैं।

Lesson 7: Bhagwan Adinath
Daughter: Mummy, let us go home.
Mother: Just wait, let me recite Bhaktamar Stotra.
Daughter: What is Bhaktamar Stotra?
Mother: It is a devotional poem in which Bhagwan – Adinath has been adored.
Daughter: Mummy, who was Adinath, in whose adoration thousands of people recite this рoem?
Mother: He was a God. He knew all the things of the world. He was perfectly happy because he was devoid of delusion, attachment and Mother aversion.
Daughter: Had he been unattached and omniscient - since birth?
Mother: No, my dear. He achieved the state of non- attachment and omniscience by his supreme efforts. Born in Ayodhya, he was the son of King Nabhiray and Marudevi, the Queen.
Daughter: Prince ! he was. Did he not rule?
Mother: Yes, he ruled and married also. He had two wives. Nanda was his first wife, who bore a hundred sons including Bharat Chakravarty and a daughter Brahmi. His second wife was Sunanda, who bore Bahubali and a daughter Sundari.
Daughter: So ! were Bharat, the Chakravarty and Bahubali sons of Lord Adinath?
Mother: Adinath attained Godhood later in life. He was simply King Rishabhdeo at that time. Since he was the first Tirthankar, he was called Adinath. One day Neelanjana was .dancing in his Court. During the course of the dance, Neelanjana passed away. Seeing this he realized the transitoriness of the world, forsook the royal life and became a saint.
For six months he remained absorbed in contemplation. For the next six months also he did not get food due to his self-imposed conditions. After a year on a certain day King Shreyans gave him sugar-cane juice for the first time. Since then the day has been celebrated as Akshaya Tritiya festival in India.
Daughter: Did he become Omniscient immediately after becoming a saint?
Mother: No, my dear, for one thousand years he remained in the state of self-absorption. One day he obtained perfect knowledge in that state and began to preach his gospel, which showed the path of liberation to the world.
Daughter: So you offer your prayers to him. I shall also do the same. Will he show me also the
path of liberation?
Mother: By all means, offer your prayers to Him. Leaving the glories of the Samavsaran, the religious court, he became a perfectly liberated soul. The way to liberation, as preached by him, is shown to us by the enlightened souls. The persons who tread his path are his true devotees and can attain Godhood in the same way.
